Setting up Iris

5 minutes from subscribe to a live phone number you can test from your own mobile.

  1. Subscribe to the add-on

Open HQ → click the phone icon in the icon rail → pick US or UK as your phone country → click Add Iris — $49/mo. Stripe checkout takes 30 seconds; on success you redirect back into HQ on the Receptionist tab.

  2. Wait ~30 seconds for provisioning

We provision a dedicated phone number on Retell AI (our voice infra), create a custom agent for your deployment, and wire it to the workspace. The Receptionist tab shows "Provisioning your phone number…" with a spinner; when it flips to your real number, you're live.

  3. Fill in the setup modal

The setup form has 7 sections — work top to bottom:

    • Business & persona — business name (used in greeting), receptionist name, industry, address, voice (5 options US/UK), tone, language.
    • What should Iris do on calls? — toggle the capabilities you want. Each toggle adds a specific tool to the live agent.
    • Hours of operation — per-day open/close. Drives the answer vs. voicemail decision.
    • Business knowledge — free-form context she should know (history, specialties, anti-patterns like "we don't deliver").
    • Special instructions — custom guardrails ("never quote over $5K", "always confirm spelling").
    • FAQs / Services — appear if you enabled Answer FAQs / Take orders / Qualify leads.
    • Forwarding & fallback — your real human phone number (required for transfers + emergency escalation to work).
    • Compliance — recording disclosure, two-party consent (CA/FL/IL/MA), opt-out keyword.

Hit Save & sync. Iris's prompt + tools regenerate on Retell within seconds.

  4. Test call from your browser

Click Test call from browser in the header bar. We open a WebRTC connection to Iris using your laptop mic — no phone needed. You hear her live and can iterate on the prompt until she sounds right.

Test calls count against your minute allowance (500 included/month) but are usually a few minutes total. Don't worry about overage during setup.
  5. Forward your business line (or publish the new one)

    Two options:

    • Replace your existing number — publish Iris's number on your site / Google Business Profile / business cards. Cleanest.
    • Forward to Iris — set call-forwarding on your existing line to Iris's number. Keeps your existing number as the "public" one. Most cell carriers support this from the carrier app or *21*<number># on the dialer.

Iterating after launch

Open Receptionist → Edit setup any time. Changes auto re-sync to Retell. Common iterations:

  • Caller asked something not in the FAQ → add the Q/A pair
  • Iris quoted a price you didn't want disclosed → flip "Disclose pricing" off
  • Calls dropping at "let me transfer you" → check forwardNumber is set + reachable
  • Caller said wrong business hours → fix the hours grid
